9/21 Earthquake As I felt
It was a moderately strong earthquake that struck around 0855UTC perhaps.I was listening to BBCWS's Sports Roundup on 15310kHz on Sept. 21st.Its epicentre was in Mongor District of Bhutan. It was like Sinewave type..low strength..at first..them suddenly a big surge ..then..low
intensity...for a while..perhaps..for nearly a minute for the entire earthquake..& the quaking was there after a while...There were several earthquakes of different intensity that were felt in the region within a month with epicentre ranging from Anadaman Nicorbar Island range from August 11th ..& .then in Burma-Manipur Border.plus other regions as epicentre ..etc were felt here in North-east specially in Assam. I felt the night earthquake at August 11th plus the one at around 0855UTC on 09/21 only.
In Guwahati, the one at 0855UTC on 09/21 created panic..& cracks plus slight leaning of some flats etc appeared..as flashed after a while in various TV News Channels ..My brother, Rupam was in office near Downtown Hospital Dispur..it was a two storey building ..he came out
quickly..after a while around 0910UTC he called us at the mobile about its impacts..Then immediately checked Bhutan Broadcasting Service , Bhutan on 6035kHz & 90.00MHz...&
regular Nepali Programme was going on...Later time to time
I was checking all the National News Channels of DD plus other news channels like NDTV,Zee News, India TV..Bengali ones E-TV Bengali News..Akas News...& surprised to note it was felt in all North Bengal Areas...Siliguri, Malda..as far as away in Kolkata plus also Dhaka,Bangladesh
...Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang ...in the opposite side ...also in Lasha..in Tibet's capital ..
Later another earthquake was felt along Sikkim..Uttrarkand areas...& also two aftershocks..of that first earthquake was felt around 0910UTC plus around 1940UTC in Guwahati &
some areas ...But I didn't find its trace though I was awoke that time i.e. 1940UTC..Rupam also mentioned he was also working in his room at late at night as per UTC time
etc..he also couldn't feel it in Guwahati.. As newsreports pouring in..later ..in the late afternoon...reported death etc plus destruction of houses plus bridges etc reported..in Mungor District of Bhutan..BBC Hindi aired special dispatch with Subir Bhoumick from Kolkata..with
backgrounds of earthquake in then Assam..as far as wayback in 1897,1950..etc etc...& panic in the region etc...during BBC Hindi's 1700-1730UTC trax..on 7435kHz..& also saw all reports of various News Channels of TV till early morning hours.

set up of Amateur Radio Stations in every District HQ plus Sub-Divisional HQ..plus in set up of Amateur Radio Clubs of interested persons etc should be encouraged & should be taken immediately...And also there should be repeaters installed to boost signals of OMs making contacts with low powers within India...& ..I think overall...there should be a great effort to promote Amateur Radio Activities.As Amateur Radio Operators can take a great role in co-ordiating relief & rescue operations by setting up emergency communications after a natural calamity.We have to face the reality with courage & determination..

Total Solar Elipse On July 22, 2009
The weather was cloudy (after last night rain) no trace of sunlight i.e.sun shine or sun that time .But around 0056 UTC onwards for three minutes or so, there was total darkness here and around 0102UTC again normal process of gaining light has begun.It was a historic occasion to me....We never wintess total darkness here in Assam during Solar Elipse in our life time.This is memorable event for me.
As per Radio Bands during total solar elipse....here...I was ready right from the 2300UTC onwards & started monitoring all the bands i.e.MW,SW,SSBs, Long Wave, FM but I had to disappointed you with my Radio Monitoring Inputs..with not a such superactive band activities on all bands i.e. .e.MW,SW,SSBs, Long Wave, FM during that period.However, I noted a Chinese Radio Station perhaps on 1377kHz with fair signal right from 2311UTC.However,some usual MW stations's weaker signal signing on could be heard. I was very disapointed with poor band conditions as per MWs etc is concerned now-a-days.However, usual lower frequencies SW Bands like 41m, 31m 49m & 60m behaved as per usually as per my monitoring right from 2300UTC.But very sad that there is no such phenomen such as super activity during the Solar Elipse ....to report in my place.Yes, due to increase of ultra voilet rays presence in atmosphere (Ionspere part) during solar elipse, there is chance of better radio communications i.e. favourable propagation conditions for radio waves to travel long distance (due to reflection etc in Ionosphere) during the time of solar elipse...perhaps this time perhaps low sunspot activites in sun perhaps no such impact plus sudden booming of radio stations during solar elipse period.
And I switched on our front verandah light to mark the occasional of total darkness during total solar elipse period for atleast three minutes or so.And many passerbys auto rikshaws etc switched on their lights during that drakness period. A few cyclist had to halt their journery during that period.A few people also narrated their stories of near fall down from cycles etc
during total darkness. Luckily no serious incident took place.

Assamese In A09 etc
Here is a time & freqency schedule of a few international radio stations (all are Christian reglious station) broadcasting in Assamese in A09 Season of international broadcasting effective from March 29,2009 to October 25,2009.
Adventist World Radio (AWR) on 15275kHz from 1330 to 1400UTC
on sunday & wednesday only via KSDA Agat Guam (100kW) .
Trans World Radio (TWR) on 12075kHz from monday to friday from 1330 to 1400UTC
via KTWR Agana Guam (100kW)
& on 12075kHz from 1330 to 1345UTC
on sunday via via KTWR Agana Guam (100kW)
Gospel for Asia broadcasts on 6040kHz via Dhabbaya UAE (250kW) from 2345 to 2400 UTC
on monday & tuesday.
Family Radio, another Christian Religious Radio Station may begin Assamese Broadcast in future.
As far as my memory goes then Radio Moscow now Voice Of Russia was so far the only major broadcasting organisation other than those Christian reglious stations to broadcast an Assamese Langguage broadcast. Perhaps it used to broadcast 15 minutes daily transmission from 1230UTC i.e. 6.00PM IST.It was discontinued in early 1990s.I still remember listening to then Radio Moscow in Assamese perhaps in late 1980s & early 1990s. And I heard the voice of Late .Nasiur Rahman, a famous Assamese News Reader with All India Radio Delhi , after retiring from his job in AIR , he went to Moscow to revive Radio Moscow in Assamese. I heard his voice in Assamese via Radio Moscow. He also used to present news & current affairs programmes etc in Bengali Section also. I heard his voice several time while listening to Bengali Section. But after sometime, the Assamese broadcast was discontinued. Late Nasiur Rahman worked in the Bengali section for a while after closer of the Assamese section before returning to India. Now this year from March 28th, even the long lasting Bengali, Urdu along with several language services has been discontinued by Voice Of Russia via shortwave & medium wave.

Bhupen Hazarika On Air From Washington DC After Moscow
Its my pleasure to inform you that I heard a few days back within the first week of A09 Season of broadcast , a song in Bengali from one & only Evergreen Bhupen Da as he is popularly called by his numerous fan & well wishers......., was aired from Voice of America Bangla Service right from Washington DC, their studio & relayed to us via their perhaps Thailand Relay on 7260kHz around 1627UTC or so.I just recorded a few moments of the song towards the end perhaps.Please listen to it by clicking the following link.

I recorded the entire supposed to be the last broadcast of Voice of Russia in Bengali on March 28th during 1530-1600UTC on 7305kHz.The reception quality was not very good but still audible.There was nothing special as such in their last transmission...just a announcement repeated from time to time..that due to some reasons radio broadcast of Voice of Russia would be not available for sometime but news etc will be available via its website ....etc.After news,current affairs reports came Listeners Mail specially from Clubs was aired.And a song from Dr.Bhupen Hazarika was aired in Bengali.....in between the listeners letters reading.So,...........another station broadcasting in Bengali going off the air....Long back heard in newspapers....in Assamese....of closing down only Assamese broadcast (of 15 minutes duration) from a major international broadcaster..other than religious station...from then Radio Moscow..Voice of Russia.......& now after a decade & half of that.......the Bengali Section also has gone off the air via shortwave.....!!!!!!!!What next???????????????

Radio Japan in Bengali,Hindi & Urdu in A09

VOA Urdu is back via shortwave
Yes, I heard loud & clear signal of VOA Urdu around 0120UTC both on 9820 & 9520kHz on Janaury 12,2009 & also not with so clear signal on 1539kHz.

Let begin this feature with Bangladesh Betar's Domestic Service shortwave transmission on 4750kHz: Yes, I've noted the fact that no transmission of Bangladesh Betar's Domestic Service is audible for several weeks. And instead a Chinese Radio station can be heard here.I thought it is due to poor progagation & also perhaps for some annual reparing etc the transmission was off the air.Thanks for the update of Dr Supratik Sanatani & contacting Senior Engineer, RRC,BB, Dhaka & informing us about the fact.
VOA Urdu via Shortwave::
I was also wondering why VOA Urdu was not heard via shortwave for many days.And also fearing the wrost ......surely thanks for Alokesh's post about DX Asia's Post about VOA Urdu again back to Medium wave only & partially tallying with my fear.I used to tune into VOA Urdu via Shortwave for nearly over two decades along with VOA Hindi & VOA Bangla besides VOA English & VOA Special English. And I'm wondering what VOA is planning to do with South Asian Languages.....They closed VOA Hindi's radio transmission.Sometime they stopped airing VOA Urdu via shortwave & only airing via Medium Wave only. And then they resumed shortwave transmission of VOA Urdu. And now again they stopped via shortwave & only goes on air via Medium wave only.
DXing With Cumbre ,World Harvest Radio English via Angel 3 Transmitter in Hawai Islands perhaps:
Perhaps for several months, I've not heard this station in A08 season due to poor propagation conditions, but now in B08 season I guess main reason for not being able to listen this DX Programme i.e. DXing With Cumbre Angel 3 Transmitter of World Harvest Radio or any other transmission in English via it. As usually, World Harvest Radio Trasmission to Asia are transmitted via this transmission.I've also found no transmission of DXing With Cumbre via Angel 3 Transmitter of World Harvest Radio is listed as far as skd. of DXing With Cumbre via World Harvest Radio released a few months back.Please check & confirm.
Radio Kuwait English on 15110kHz from 0500 to upto 0800UTC perhaps.
I've not heard any Radio Kuwait in English on 15110kHz from 0500UTC onwards for past several weeks.The channel remains blank. And also you can hear Radio Pakistan's QRM slightly sometime from 15100kHz.

Got fair signal of the trax. of Radio Japan Bengali on January 8,2009 around 1325UTC or so on 15215kHz.But while checking around 1439UTC on 15215kHz during R.Japan-Hindi, there no audible signal heard by me.Perhaps the signal faded away.

This station can be heard now-a-days on 12020kHz from 1000UTC onwards with fair signal.
DXPL via HCJB-Australia:
DXPL via HCJB-Australia was heard on 15540kHz on January 8,2009 from 1310UTC for 15 minutes or so loud & clear signal.
DW Radio in South Asian Languages via 1548kHz:
At night, I've found marked improvement in reception quality on DW Radio's Medium Wave transmission in South Asian Languages now-a-days from 1430UTC onwards via its Trincomalee,Sri Lanka relay .

Punching Error in AIR Guwahati Also!!!!

Was this a Punching Error in AIR Guwahati??????????????????
I was listening to AIR Guwahati's Commerical Extension Service Programme On Assamese Music "Suwarani" from 0225UTC onwards on 100.8MHz (FM Mode) here in my home town Abhayapuri (178km-200km away from Guwahati ) loud & clear.There was a short two minutes or so breaks for FM News Headlines around 0230UTC.Just after this around 0233UTC , the normal programme announcement was given for next song of Assamese flim "Sakuntala,Sankar Aru Joshep Ali", there was News in Hindi perhaps which was on the air via AIR-Guwahati's Medium Wave relay i.e. 729kHz & 4940kHz Shortwave relay from AIR Delhi. After a spell of silence then came song in Hindi perhaps relayed Vividh Bharati AIR Mumbai for a few minutes. I switched off the Rx then to respond the nature call for a few minutes. And while returning back around 0241UTC or so, I found Assamese songs from the flim "Sakuntala,Sankar Aru Joshep Ali" was on the air.Perhaps, the problem by that time was sorted out. Perhaps the technical guy punched right piece of cable to the feed in plug after initial mistake.And I think this is the "Punching Error" as often we see in posts in DX India Yahoo Groups....
If it is so, then GK has fortunate enough to witness this error.
For your info, this AIR Guwahati FM Station on 100.8 MHz takes a short 20 minutes break from AIR Mumbai Vividh Bharati Relay from 0225 to 0245UTC for this AIR Guwahati's Commerical Extension Service Programme On Assamese Music "Suwarani".And then rejoins Vividh Bharati Relay from 0245 to upto 0345UTC.And again AIR Guwahati's Commerical Extension Service Programme takes over from 0345UTC onwards upto perhaps 0500 ot 0530UTC or towards end of the morning transmission. There are two break for FM News Headlines in Assamese at 0225 & 0445UTC onwards.
