J3E Signal From  Puerto Rico At Abhayapuri In This June(15th & 22nd)

Year Ending Amateur Radio  Special 2021 III

VU2OWB, OM Avijit Mondal from Khaspur , West Bengal,a ham friend of mine alerted me  about hearing strong signal of  WP3R OM Angle on 14200kHz usb from Puerto Rico in the morning perhaps during 2nd week of June .He did give calls but might be his signal did not reach WP3R in Puerto Rico.I kept monitoring this frequency 14200kHz usb.At first I thought my simple set up with long wire antenna and a Grundig Yacht Boy 80(described as useless by many BCDXERs), was not ideal set up to catch the signal from Puerto Rico.

But June 15th & 22nd(both days) , what happened on 14200kHz usb from 0200utc onwards for one and half hours was quite unbelievable.I heard extremely strong signal WP3R OM Angel from  Puerto Rico The signal strength of WP3R varied from time to time 59 to 33 and again picked up strength But most of the time it was 59 .And there were a few US based amateur stations operating from different locations of US with WP3R viz.K3LR perhaps operating from Ohio,K8CX ? etc  and a few South Amercian Stations might be on air but they were very weak here.And many Indian Stations viz VU3WEW OM Adi  from Kozhikode,VU3GDS OM Girish Doss from Bengaluru,VU2ELJ OM Sabu from Wayanad ,VU2OO from Guna,VU2YK OM Rahul Kapoor from  New Delhi,VU2ZKC OM Kuldeep from Rajasthan,VU2DED OM Ajay Gupta From New Delhi made QSO with WP3R & others,along wth a few Russian Stations plus A41LD OM Waleed from Muscat,Oman also made contact as far as I could recall.

Now a brief note on  WP3R, OM Angel M. Vazquez Jr..

He is now working as the head of telescope operations of  Arecibo Observatory.Arecibo in  Puerto Rico 

He has worked more than 40 years at the Arecibo Observatory including senior telescope operator, spectrum manager, PC systems administrator, and RFI manager.As per  info posted ,Dayton Hamvention  has  named WP3R as the Amateur Of The Year for 2021.

 He got his amateur license in 1993.After holding several callsigns for different categories of licenses, in 1997 he got this vanity callsign WP3R.  He also headed the moon bounce effort of the  Arecibo Observatory in 2010.He provided emergency communication support to the families everyday for several months  aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017 in Puerto Rico .He was named the Amateur of the Year in Puerto Rico in 2018 and also got the YASME Excellence Award in 2019.

 He likes to participate in conests and DXING.

WP3R might have used highly directional antenna to beam towards Indian Ocean,Arabic Ocean etc and power might be 1kW or above.

I guess he was operating from .Arecibo both days from his location(Grid Square FK68oj )
