And now An Obituary Reference
VU2PTF From Tinsukia is now A Silent Key:
With a heavy heart and immense saddness, I like to inform you all , VU2PTF(Rudra Prasad Sarma) , one of senior most as wellas one of the  pioneer amateur radio operator in Assam and in the North East India passed away on the night of August 28th  at a hospital in Mumbai while undergoing treatment. He was 75(1950-2026).He retired as a Deputy Manager in State Bank Of India(SBI) in 2012 and settled in his home town Tinsukia later. He got his amateur radio license in late 1980s . I heard him on air as a Shortwave Listener(SWL) on 40mb from 2017 for two years or so when he was operating from Tinsukia. And I used to give him reception updates of your signal via social media & other platforms as SWL. During my interaction with him , I came to know him as a keen homebrewer of radio-electrical & electronics  related things and also a guitarist. During his college days and before joining SBI,  I understand he was a much sought after guitarist in Tinsukia, his home town . After joining SBI,  he did not get much time for music performance as guitarist. And he also had to move to different locations every three or four years. But  still he used to devote his time in homebrewing electrical & electronics projects after returning from the job in the evening. He used to build sound boxes etc or others things too. One of his senior bank  colleague during his posting  at Nahakatia  suggested him to go for  amateur radio hobby(perhaps in late 1970s or early 1980s) . Somewhere he got address of Kerala Amateur Radio League,Kerala  and got information in detail about the process of amateur Radio in India. He also got study materials from the organisation as far as I could remember telling me.And that's was the beginng of his amateur radio journey.
Later from his social media posts of him , I came to know about his skills in carpentary and as a sketch artist. We used to have interact via mobile phone from time to time  and many things I came to know about his journey with amateur radio.
He was one of the founding members of Amateur Radio Society of Assam(ARSA) and also worked in different capacities in the society including at the time of his death as its Advisor.
His death of widely mourned by Amateur Radio Society of Assam(ARSA) members. ARSA held a condolence meeting  to mourn the death of VU2PTF on August 30th in Guwahati.
And I had atleast three eyeball QSOs with him during Annual General Meeting(AGM) of ARSA in Guwahati. His death is a personal loss for me. After I  becoming a ham sometime back, he used to encourage me to come to the band on HF with his usual witty style. Those words still fresh in my mind.  Surely, I will try my best to ink my empty pages of my  station log book with entries of my contacts.

The following lines of Gulzar's song often comes into my mind when I listen to numerous audio clips of his QSOs on air on 40mb recorded by me now....
"Naam gum jaayegaa
Chehara ye badal jayegaa
Meri aavaaz hi pahachaan hai
Gar yaad rahe.."
Here is a video clip of SK VU2PTF's  QSO on 7145kHz lsb  from wayback  on December 19th of 2017 around 0654ist with VU2RAK of New Delhi. This is in the memory of SK VU2PTF.

Rest In Peace OM VU2PTF! Rest In Peace!

BCDX Monitoring Latest From Abhayapuri

First B26 Schedule Update:
KBS World Radio posted its schedule B26 winter season for English transmission directed to India on their website as early as August 31st. It will be on air on 9630kHz in place of 9785kHz effective from  October 25th.
The reception of KBS World in English has been very poor on 31mb during 1400-1600utc here for a long time due to moderate to strong co-channel/adjacent channels  interference. Most of the time nothing of KBS World English is audible here at all.

BBC World Service English:
BBC World Service In English recently replaced its evening frequency  17835kHz during 1200-1300utc with 17745kHz (via Al Seela,Oman 250kW). The reception has been excellent as per latest monitoring observation all.

Meanwhile HFCC has already released a tentative B26 winter transmission schedule and which is now availble at
https://new.hfcc.org/data/b26/
And the news is  not encouraging at all for South Asia from BBC World Service. After checking the tentative schedule ...

on 15400kHz during 1330-1400utc.
And from June onwards for a few sundays , the overall reception of the transmission here in my place had been  due to poor signal strength(QSA) and increase of noise (QRN) i.e.noisy reception condition.

FM Radio News & Reception Updates From Abhayapuri

News About A New FM Station
Radio Gupshup on 95MHz Now in Jorhat Town:
As per post on facebook of BCDXER/amateur radio operator  from Jorhat Town OM Prithwiraj Purkayastha  (VU3TQD) , from October 5th, Radio Gupshup has started broadcasting from Jorhat Town on 95MHz . Gupshup is also on air on 94.3MHz from Guwahati, Dhubri  & Halflong in Assam . For Jorhat, it is on air on 95MHz rather than its usual 94.3MHz perhaps due to technical reasons. Our Titabar based radio enthuiast/amateur radio operator VU3WTS( OM Bimal Chutia) informed me he also received the station there but noisy reception & with weak  signal. Titabar is about 18 km(approx.) aways from Jorhat town aerially. This is the first privately owned FM Station to be on air from Jorhat. Akashvani has a FM Station there in Jorhat and it is on air on 103.4MHz. Radio Gupshup is also on air from Awizal & Itanagar on 94.3MHz.
Reception Updates of FM Radio At Abhayapuri:
But recently the reception quality of FM Broadcasting Stations here at my Abhayapuri has been going down and down. Here is a report..
(For all monitorings, I have used Grundig Yacht Boy 400 antenna with fully extended telescopic antenna plus sometimes a long wire external antenna specially for DX FM Stations though not the ideal choise still earlier I got good results..)
Akashvani Goalpara on 102.6MHz:
Now-a-days, even Akashvani Goalpara on 102.6MHz, which was received loud and clear here at my home town Abhayapuri earlier (the aerial distance around 18km approx.) , has been poor to barely audible and often noisy reception.I think it is broadcasting on low power or antenna might be not working as it should have due to summer rains or struck by lightning(not sure). Let me monitor for sometime.
Here is a recorded audio file link of Akashvani Goalpara on 102.6MHz around 0331utc on
October 19th...
Also on October 19th...here is another recorded audio clip link recorded around 0351utc:
Akashvani Kokrajhar on 102MHz:
Akashvani Kokrajhar on 102MHz with news antenna set up plus higher power (aerial distance from Abhayapuri might be around 42km ) used to be heard with loud with slight noise sometimes after its inguaration for a few months. But as the time , its overall reception has been not consistence.Though it was annouced that it would cover a 70km radius area. But On October 10th, the reeption is more less satisfactory and during relay of Assamsese Morning News from 0330utc the signal gain strength .
Here is a two recorded audio files link  of Akashvani Kokrajhar on 102MHz..
On October 19th...
around 0329utc..
& around 0344utc.
It is to be noted once a reliable station on FM band here Bhutan Broadcsting Service(BBS) on 96MHz now-a-days has been not audible as such and most of the time poor plus noisy as per my monitoring.
And Guwahati based private FM Stations viz. Radio Mirchi 95MHz, Red FM 93.5MHz, Radio Gupshup FM on 94.3MHz etc are not heard  here for a long time as such(Sometimes murmuring signal).
Akashvani Guwahati Mahabahu on 101.6MHz is very weak and  noisy here most of the time. Also I am unable to hear Vivid Bharati Guwahati on 100.8MHz at all.
But there was a time, a few years back, I listened to FM stations from as far as away  from Bangladesh Betar Dhaka , ABC Radio Dhaka, & Bangladesh Betar Mymensingh , Akashvani Siliguri,Akashvani  Kurseong , Akashvani Shillong FM Rainbow Service  & our state Assam's Akashvani Nogaon & Akashvani Jorhat too with my with long wire antenna plus telescopic antenna fully extended with Grundig YB 400 receiver, besides FM Stations from Bhutan Broadcasting Service on 90MHz & 96MHz.  And on a few occasions, during evening-night hours , I could copy with my another receiver  Grudnig YB 80 on battery with telescopic antenna fully extended on our verandah & just outiside our home , lots of FM Stations of Bangladesh & West Bengal. Those were the golden periods.

I am in hurry to post backlogs of reports/reception logs etc compiled by me for many weeks now whose I could not do due to my recent health issues plus other issues. So, there may some errors here and there.I apologise to you all for my lapse. And just for the sake of hobby of radio listening/monitoring, I am posting my observations etc.

More observations//monitoring reports etc coming soon.

Due to rain & thunder, I stopped monitoring after 0750ist & disconnected antenna etc from the RIG, a few minutes later a huge lightning strike took place with flashing of light & huge sound heard,
An interesting Info received via OM VU3NYV from Shillong this morning .
Around 0815ist on 7090kHz lsb, he made a voice contact with  a Guwahati based station VU2JDH with  45 55 report , VU2JDH operating on QRP perhaps with 3-4 Watt. I have not heard about this station VU2JDH earlier. Let me check my callsign database.Let me monitor VU2JDH myself on 40mb in coming days in the morning. And thanks to OM VU3NYV from the Scotland of the East , Shillong for sharing this information.
OM VU3NYV is also working on a few homebrewing antenna projects and also working on a QRP (less than 5W) 40mb ssb transreceiver .It is to reminded all his HF antennas he has used so far all are homebrewed by him. Hope in future, I will share more of his homebrewing actitives related to Amateur Radio. He has also great interest in broadcasting band listening shortwave, medium wave & FM too. I understand he is a very busy man. Still, I hope ,he will share his loggings of BC Stations.

BBC's Annual Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast 2026

As per news circulating in many  BCDX social media platforms, British Broadcasting Cooporation(BBC)'s Antarctic  Midwinter Broadcast for 2026 will be on June 2ist during 2130-2200utc (Sunday) on shortwave on the following frequencies viz.
9460 kHz(via Woofferton), 9510kHz(via Ascension) & on 12070kHz(via Woofferton).
The broadcast will be also available on DAB in UK & also online at

The BBC Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast is a special annual half hour program by BBC World Service for scientists and other staff working at the British Stations in the Antarctic  isolated  in harsh winter condition. It is aired on June 21st coinciding with the midwinter solstice in Antarctica. The program features interviews, music requests, messages to family members & friends etc.The program also includes a specially recorded message from the the British monarch.
More information about  the history of BBC's Annual  Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast, here is a useful link.....

I like to share story of my so far the sole attempt to listen to this  BBC's Annual  Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast from 2018 i.e. 8 years back...........Which was posted on this blog.
........................................................
My First Ever Attempt On BBC Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast
BBC Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast  for 2018 was heard here in my QTH on three frequencies( as per lastest update posted on mt-shortwave.blogspot.com) 5985kHz & 9890kHz (via Woofferton) and 7360kHz via Ascension Islands on )June 21st (of 2018).
RX:Grundig Yacht Boy 400
ANT:Cu WIRE 78' Length 30' Height With COAX LEADIN
Geographical Location of Reception Place(Abhayapuri):
Longitude:26º18´20´´North
Latitude:90º37´50´´East
And the signal was audible on 5985kHz & 9890kHz.And the reception (the signal strength )was better on 9890kHz than 5985kHz.The fading was there on both frequencies.
And on 7360kHz there was heavy noise plus perhaps sideband splatter & very very difficult to pick up the audio contents.
Here is the link to the audio recorded on 5985kHz from 2129utc:
The link to the audio recorded on  9890kHz from 2134utc
The link to the audio recorded on  7360kHz from  2138utc
The link to the audio recorded on 9890kHz at 2142utc
and finally the link to the audio recorded on 9890kHz  from 2159utc:
And this is my first attempt to listen to BBC Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast & very glad that I could pick up the signals.
My special thanks goes to the two DX News Source  Wolfgang Büschel, Germany's WORLDWIDE DX CLUB Top News and Shortwave Central Blog (mt-shortwave.blogspot.com) for latest update on BBC Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast  for 2018.
My special mention goes to My DX friend from New Delhi Mr.Alokesh Gupta(VU3BSE), who's previous loggings of BBC Antarctic Midwinter Broadcast is always an inspirtation for me.

The frequency was listed as before in previous B25 winter season as 9705kHz. As per latest information posted , due to interference problem,  the frequency has been changed with immediate effect to 9740kHz.
So, again the latest schedule...
VORW Radio International English Via Taiwan
To East Asia, Southeast Asia, Pacific, The Americas
Thursdays Only
0900-1000utc 9740kHz

and also search the net for more informations.
Let me check the reception quality on 9740kHz during 0900-1000utc tomorrow i.e. on thursday during its broadcast via Taiwan if possible or on future thursdays.

Here is my earlier  post related to VORW Radio International English  via Taiwan posted on my blog as a part of my monitoring observation on December 31st, 2025.I am including this as part of reference.
..........................................
VORW Radio International English  Via Paochung ,Tiwan(300kW) :
VORW Radio International is broadcasting in English on thursdays from October 30th(2025) on 9705kHz during 0900-1000utc from Paochung ,Tiwan(300kW) to  East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Pacific. The reception has been fair to good overall with noise slight to moderate here as per with my monitoring with a long wire in my Grundig YB 400.But on November 20th, I found strong signal of VORW Radio International from 0912utc onwards on 9705kHz with news on air etc as far as I could not remember.I also recorded a few audios of the transmission. There might be slight variations of time of the recordings.I am sorry for that.
Here are a few of my recordings links VORW Radio International on November 20th on 9705kHz , the day of its strongest signal strength...
0913utc ..
0914utc..
 0915utc
And also I recorded on the thursday ..December 11th..
at 0949utc..the audo link..
And the very lastest on thursday on the Christmas day...
at around 0915utc..
0915utc ..the audio link..
except on December 25th ...End Feed long wire was used as an external antenna along with my Grundig Yatch Boy 400..On December 25th I have used my Inverted V dipole as external antenna.

Akashvani previously  also known as All India Radio (AIR) Turns 90
Akashvani has completed its  90th glorious years   on June 8th.
