Radio Japan NHK World Bengali Hindi Urdu Reception Update:

There has been very poor to barely audible signal of Radio Japan HNK World in Bengali & Hindi Service transmission for several weeks now on 11610kHz during 1500-1530utc and 1530-1550utc respectively.

And have not monitored yet sufficiently the transmission of Radio Japan Urdu on 11620kHz (via Yamata-Japan,300kW) during 1600-1620utc for weeks.But on random check sometimes during the beginning period,the signal strength has been very weak.

Station KNLS Alaska English via Madagascar World Voice(MWV):

During my recent monitoring .it is now broadcasting on 13760kHz from 0200-0258utc and again with repeat from 0300-0356utc on the same frequency.And their usual signing off annoucement at the end also mentions about this schedule.The reception overall has been good with slightly noisy sometimes and also slight co-channel interference sometimes.

BBC Bangla The Final Count down On Radio:

BBC Bangla is ending its radio transmission on December 31st this year.And now they are broadcasting interviews with famous personalities of India and Bangladesh from their archive.On this series a few days back i.e. on December 23rd ,from 1344utc onwards on 11750kHz (during 1330-1400utc transmission) , heard an interview (parts of the interview) recorded in 1977(in London) with "Sudhakantha" Bhupen Hazarika.Shyamal Lodh interviewed HIM.I heard about the interview of BBC Bangla in a book of Bhupen Hazarika.I thought it will not be able to listen it in my life time.But not only I got a chance but recorded it on air that evening.A dream realised.I will upload it later on my blog.

I have already heard interview of late Jyoti Basu ,then Chief Minister of West Bengal,who was interviewed in 1984 during his visit to UK.He was also interviewed by Shyamal Lodh.

1.All India Radio(AIR) External Service Nepali:

On the boxing day i.e.December 26th, AIR Ext Ser.Nepali heard with good reception overall from 0256utc onwards for a few minuteson 15210kHz (via SPT Bengaluru,500kW) with Hindi film song plus station idd and  World News.

2.Radio New Zealand(RNZ) English on 7390kHz

For several days,RNZ English only audible to some extent with not so good signal only on 7390kHz from 1400utc for sometime as monitored by me.There was weak side band splatter as interference from a broadcasting station on 7385kHz.

3.Radio Romania International(RRI) English
on 7325kHz from 0100-0156utc

Towards North America East Coast

This is for the first time in many winter seasons RRI English on 7325kHz on the mentioned slot has not been audible as such on my place.Though this RRI English transmission directed to  North America East Coast but still I could listen to it loud and clear here in every winter seasons.But this time it is totally different condition.

4.Radio Taiwan International(RTI) English On 15320kHz during 0300-0400utc

RTI English on that frequency is giving me good reception now-a-days.

5.Radio Philipinas Worldwide English

This station in English nowi s  broadcasting on three frequencies viz. 17820,15640 & 9475kHz during 0200-0330utc.

The reception has been on excellent on 17820 & 15640kHz but very poor overall on 9475kHz in my location.

Monitoring News From Debdaru Town*

Here is a latest few monitoring observation which I like to share with you all.

Receiver:Grundig Yacht Boy 400

Radio Japan NHK World in Bengali,Hindi & Urdu:
Radio Japan is now transmitting in this winter seasson(B22) effective from October 30th of 2022 to March 25th of 2023 via Yamata Japan(300kW) in Bengali,Hindi & Urdu language to our region.The schedule goes like this:
On 11610kHz first in Bengali from 1500 to 1530utc & then in Hindi from 1530-1550utc.
And in Urdu on 11620kHz from 1600-1620utc.
But for a several weeks, the reception quality overall is not good at all in case of  Bengali transmission.The signal strength is much weaker than earlier and very noisy and also slight side band splatter also observed from a station broadcasting on 11620kHz.Sometimes, the signal is not audible at all.
In case of Hindi transmission, I have heard signal with much weaker signal than before I used to receive.
And the same in the case of Radio Japan Urdu Service on 11620kHz.I will monitor more regularly this coming week for more detail reception information.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation(SLBC) External Service Hindi:
As per my observation (latest On December 10th), SLBC Ext. Ser. Hindi is still off the air on 11905kHz during its first part of its transmission (0030-0100utc) for several weeks now.And it is on air on 11905kHz as usual during 0200-0230utc i.e. 2nd part of the
transmission.Sometime back, a noted BCDXER offered interesting observations  on the issue on a facebook page.It has hinted towards discontiuation of SLBC Hindi 0030-0100 utc slot for other leased transmission hours to other broadcaster.Still, I hope this is a temporary arrangement.

I observed  moderate noise(jamming?) on BBCWS English transmission on 15310utc from 0100utc onwards on December 10th.

Radio Romania International(RRI) English:
During 0100-0156utc on 7325kHz Towards North America East Coast
For several winter seasons, I used to listen to this transmission in our area with excellent to good reception though our area is not the target area of broadcast.But this season only noise is audible and sometimes weak signal audible for brief period.
The same is the case of the 0000-0056utc Spanish language transmission of RRI on 7325kHz.

Monitor's Special Notes (Khas Tippani)

SLBC Ext. Ser Hindi's  first transmission i.e.0030-0100utc  on 11905kHz  is currently off the air.And another thing I have noticed about the 2nd half of transmission i.e. 0200-0230utc slot  that the program airs old Hindi film songs and programs ends only always with songs of late Kundal Lal Saigal as per my observation for a few years.A rare tribute to a singer from a radio station.And SLBC also aired a special tribute program as a mark of respect to  Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar  on February 6th (2022) on 11750kHz from 1630utc onwards.

Voice Of Mongolia(VOM) English On 12085kHz during 0900-0930utc

The Same Old Story Side Band Splatter from 12080kHz 

The reception remains the same on VOM English on 12085kHz here.The moderate to heavy interference as  side band splatter from a broadcasting station on 12080kHz during the mentioned time slot prevents me to copy signal of that station.It is on rare occasion when signal strength of that  broadcasting station on 12080kHz becomes weak, you can hear some sort of audio from VOM English.This has been the case for several seasons now.

All India Radio (AIR)External Service Nepali 

On 15210kHz , On November 14th,there was no transmission observed during  0209utc  random check on that frequency.

But later around 0233utc,I found strong signal on air and  AIR Morning News In Hindi was on air.

And again on November 15th, I checked around 0200utc ,I found no transmission on that frequency.But later during my another check on 15210kHz from 0247utc .I found AIR Ext Ser. Nepali back on air with strong signal.

Voice Of America (VOA) Bangla Left Air Wave(A3E) For Good

Finally Voice of America (VOA) Bangla has ended its radio transmission on July 17,2021.For a few years it was only on air on medium wave (1575kHz..its long standing medium wave frequency) after terminating its short wave broadcast.And  a release was posted VOA website regarding this a few days before July 17th about this

Thanks for the link forwarded by Mr.Prithwiraj Purkayastha ,VU3TQD a BCDXER turned amateur radio operator from Jorhat Town from my home state Assam.

In 1980s when I began to tune into VOA Bangla there was two one hour transmission and in the evening it was from 1600 to 1700utc.Later in early 2000s the morning transmission was reduced to half an hour and eventually it was discontinued after sometime.And only one hour night transmission was on air for sometime.And then one hour transmission was reduced to two half hour transmission at night and the 2nd transmission was the repeat of first.And again after sometime VOA Bangla  ended its shortwave transmission and only broadcasted on its long standing medium wave frequency on 1575kHz.And I thin due to several reasons I did not listen to this station for a long time as such sometimes just checked its reception on 1575kHz on rare occasions.Last time I came to know that VOA Bangla was on air on 1575kHz during 1800-1830utc now-a-days.

I listened to the last day of the program besides world news and the program aried voices of presenters broadcasting news..audio clips of famous personalities interviewed by VOA Bangla,,audio clips of various feature programs of VOA Bangla..and the audio clips of listeners Mailbag Program Mitali...

Me & Voice Of America (VOA) Bangla:

It was way back from early 1983 during the one of the most troublesome period of recent political history of Assam along with BBC Bangla ,BBC Hindi ,I,first came in touch with Voice Of America(VOA) Bangla & Hindi Service.And though I lost in touch with those stations after sometime due to  my study etc.Later from 1989 onwards I again begun again listening to VOA Bangla along with other stations.And after April 1997 ,I began to correspond with VOA Bangla Service.Several of my letters were read and mentioned in their Listeners Mailbag Program .."Mitali".The programs contents were  very informative and specially I like their magazine program "Potamac Theke Padha...".I like their presenters dramatic unique style of presenting programs.And in my ears still comes the voices ofVOA Bangla........presenters...Iqbal Bahar Choudhury..Asim Chakrovorty  Ramen Paine .Rokya Hyder Masuma Khatun Dilhara Hasim Segufta Nasreen Queen..Sarkar Kabiruddin  Syed Ziaur Rahman Ashraful Alam  Anis Ahmed...& Iqbal Ahmed,Koffe Khan etc and  from Dhaka with regular reports on current affairs mainly ..Matiur Rahman Choudhury, Amir Khasru Zahurul Alam . and .from Kolkata ..with regular reports Paramasish Ghosh Roy..and many others including a few of the presenters who joined VOA Bangla during the last decade and recently.

VOA Bangla & Assam Connection..:

VOA Bangla's 50th anniversary was celebrated on Janaury 1,2008. They aired a special program marking the golden jubliee year on Janaury 1,2008. I missed the program on shortwave. But I heard about 40 minutes of VOA-Bangla's Live Calling In Programme on January 9,2008 during 1600-1700UTC transmission on 11500kHz about 50 Years of VOA Bangla & Its Fan Club. Before the Live Call In Programme then Head of VOA Bangla Mr.Iqbal Bahar Choudhury gave a brief history of VOA Bangla right from January 1,1958. I was surprised by one key information about VOA Bangla in late 50s-60s perhaps from Mr. Mr.Iqbal Bahar Choudhury himself    that one Assamese person from Assam, one Late Ranjan Bora who had great knowledge of Bangla worked in VOA Bangla for a long time. He settled   in USA & died there.I searched the net extensively on the internet I could not find any details of him.And also I requested  a few of my Radio friends for any information about him but they also could not help me.

Potomac Theke Padda..My Favourite Program On VOA Bangla:

February 16, 2003 I heard the magazine program of VOA Bangla Service "Potomac Theke Padda" in the morning show (From 0130 to 0200 UTC on 25mb) presented by Sarkar Kabiruddin. The program highlighted some Bengali Radio Stations of United States of America. And in the program I also heard brief recordings of their broadcast like station identification announcements, Bengali songs by Runa Lila. The presenter also gave brief history of radio stations broadcasting in Bengali.In the Program, comments of two persons behind Nabin Bangla Radio Station in Michigan State was aired. They didn't have any previous broadcasting background but they have very well connected with print media i.e. newspaper/magazine media. That had helped them in the project. They also highlighted the cost factor of their broadcast. I made a short note on that feature. But I lost track of it. So, please discuss with other dxers/VOA Bangla Service about the program for more accurate details.

I'll send an e-mail to Bangla Service of VOA to rebroadcast the feature in near future. Also I'm not aware if VOA Bangla Service had previously broadcast any feature on that topic.

GKCALLING BC DX Bulletin Special Advent Of Spring Summer Release

Radio Japan NHK World Bengali Service:
It has been announced in the sunday mailbag program "Katha O Sur" (on 21st March ) that as per decision of the authority of Radio Japan NHK World from next new broadcast season effective from 28th of March, Bengali Service will be 30 minutes duration instead of present 45 minutes.From Monday to friday,there will be 15 minutes each of news and feature programs.And on saturdays & sundays ,there will be 10 minutes of news and 20 minutes of feature programs.

It has been reported in facebook DX groups that VOA Bangla Service is on air from 1800-1830utc  on 1575kHz.And on March 23rd ,I got its signal at my QTH at Abhayapuri from 1800utc onwards just after end of another language transmission from VOA.

I have not tuned  into it for many months.Not sure whether it has changed its time or off the air for sometime.Its my pleasure  to hear the voice of Rukia Hyder , Izzaz Bin Hussian and Parmashis Ghosh Roy from Kolkata etc. after a long break.

All India Radio Tura on 1233kHz:
On March 16th,I monitored All India Radio Tura which is located in Garo Hills in Meghalaya State.And I heard its faint signal from 1324utc onwards and also band was noisy as it happens in my place on medium wave in the evening.But later around 1353utvc onwards for a few minutes,I could hear good signal of AIR Tura with covid 19 vaccination infos on air in local Garo language and mentioning the name Tura ,I could confirm its none other than AIR Tura....

Bangladesh Betar on 4750kHz Special Transmission:
Bangladesh Betar on 4750kHz was heard on March 17th morning here at Abhayapuri with fair to poor overall reception with special program on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's brith anniversary.I heard from 0425 to 0538utc  with several breaks on 4750kHz with music-songs on Banga Bandhu & discussions etc. in Bengali.

The signal though not distorted as it happens during Bangladesh Betar's evening transmission of various languages for its external services on the same frequency i.e.4750kHz.But was noisy with fading etc.

A Few Radio News Items

 Update From Sri Lanka:
Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation(SLBC) External Service Hindi transmission is now audible regularly as per schedule on 11905kHz during 0030-0059utc with overall good reception.The signal strength is good,though slight interference as a form of sideband splatter has been observed.Thanks to my radio monitor friend Mr.Avijit Mondal (VU2OWB From Khaspur,West Bengal for his monitoring tip on SLBC Hindi on 11905kHz.I did air check on March 12th on 11905kHz from 0031utc  first time after several weeks.

Myanmar Radio on 9730kHz :
No English Transmission has been heard on 9730kHz as per skd from 0230 to 0330utc for several days now.Instead,local language programs was on air.

Adventist World Radio(AWR) Wavescan Program schedule in A21:

On March 14th edition of the program , program host Jeff White announced the A21 season schedule of  Wavescan program effective from 28th of the instant.

I was listening to the program on 6155kHz relayed from Duchanbe,Tajikistan during 1530-1600utc.The reception was not good at all due to variable signal strength plus fading slight to moderate co-channel plus side band  interference .Still managed  to copy some parts of it.But noted DXER and a regular  contributor to  Wavescan Program from several decades  Jose Jacob(VU2JOS) from Hyderabad posted the skd in facebook.I copied some of the frequenices from the post which I could note down.

Good Signal strength,Reception overall not satisfactory as usual, there is slight to moderate side band interference (splatter)from  a broadcasting station on 12080kHz ,today QRM is is not so strong, as  I could copy signal of Voice Of Mongolia to a great extent comparing to other days.But normally due to severe side band splatter nothing can be copied.

A General Observation:

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC)'s External Service's Hindi transmission is not heard here during its only transmission slot 0030-0100utc on 11905kHz for several days now including this new year as far my monitoring.

A Special Radio Monitoring Report

Here is a few special radio monitoring observations during initial two weeks of B20 season of international radio broadcast season effective from October 25th of 2020.

Radio Philipinas Worldwide English:
Noted BCDXER & Amateur Radio operator, Mr.Abhijit Mondal(VU2OWB) from Khaspur,West Bengal observed  resumption of normal broadcast of Radio Philipinas Worldwide English upto 0330utc recently in this B20 season.Thanks to my friend VU2OWB for sharing this information and bringing to my notice.Due to outbreak of Covid 19 ,the transmission hour was reduced this summer.

Now as per the announcement on air,Radio Philipinas Worldwide English can be heard on  15640kHz,17800kHz and 17820kHz during 0200 to 0330utc.But as per my air check, the transmission is audible on 15640 & 17820kHz in my location.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation(SLBC) External Service Hindi:
SLBC Ext Serv. Hindi was off the air on 11905kHz in the first week of November perhaps from November 5th.And as per news posted in a DX Group it was off the air  because of corona virus  infection of its staff.

But on sunday last i.e. November 8th , I heard SLBC Hindi back on air with good signal on its usual frequency 11905kHz from 0034utc to 0059utc.And towards the end around 0058utc ,lady presenter announced about the end of today's transmission & word of caution with the inccrease threat of corona virus.It is now clear to me why I not being able to hear the 2nd half of transmission i.e. from 0200 to 0230utc on 11905kHz for sometime now.Actually SLBC Hindi now is now on air only during 0030 to 0059utc on 11905kHz.
It is be noted during this 0030-0059utc  transmission includes around 12-15 minutes of Gospel Program in Bengali.This is still continuing.
Its a unique arrangement.

Radio Taiwan International (RTI) English on 6185kHz:
RTI English has changed its 1600-1700utc frequency of 9405kHz to 6185kHz from November 1.The reception has been good here in my area so far as per my monitoring.

Voice Of Mongolia(VOM) English:
Voice Of Mongolia English is facing moderate to heavy interference from a broadcasting station as usual during its 0900 to 0930utc transmission on 12085kHz.It is in the form of side band splatter from 12080kHz.It is very difficult to copy VOM English transmission on 12085kHz.It is happening for a long time.I wrote many times earlier about it and request for a change of frequency above 12085kHz.But till today no action has been taken.It may be it is happening in our area also and in other areas of the target region its broadcast is reaching without any problem.

Observations Of Some Regional All India Radio(AIR) Station:

 AIR-Kurseong on 4895kHz was noted back on air with good signal here a few weeks back.But now it is again off the air including today i.e.February 11th in the morning.And again another very disappointing news to share..as per my monitoring AIR North Eastern Service (NES) From Shillong is now off the air on both 4970kHz & 7315kHz(day frequency) for several weeks from now.

A Quick Update On 0300-0400utc Monitoring Of A Few Broadcasting Stations..Here.. today..:

Station KNLS Alaska  via MWV on 15510kHz  was blasting...along with Radio Japan Japanese on 15590kHz...little weak on 15195kHz...Radio Taiwan International  English is weak on 15320kHz...Philippines Broadcasting Service  English  was giving good signal on 17820kHz & 15640kHz as usual...now back to 9730kHz..Myanmar Radio English good..reception ...

Radio Japan Hindi was very weak on 9820kHz as observed around 0115utc.

SLBC Hindi 11905kHz 0209 to 0229utc (several airchecks) Good Signal now-a-days Hindi Film songs on air.

Radio Philipinas English is  heard with variable signal on all three frequencies i.e.17820,15640 & 12010kHz now-a-days right from 0200utc

Radio Taiwan International(RTI)-English 15320kHz 0357-0359utc Fair signal moderate fading was there slight QRM as a form sideband splatter from Japanese station broadcasting on 15325kHz.

Voice Of Mongolia English on 12085kHz during 0900-0930utc is facing heavy interference (QRM) as a form of sideband splatter from a station broadcasting on 12080kHz and as per my aircheck today the signal of Voice Of Mongolia was very difficult to copy.

During my recent monitorings for several days in the morning approx. from 0130-0330utc AIR-Gangtok on 4835kHz is received with good signal & audio.The noise(severve hum) which was often heard with the signal of AIR-Gangtok is not observed by me.Perhaps the transmitter problem has been rectified fully.Let me monitor for sometime.

Radio Station Nearest To Me..All India Radio-Kokrajhar

Around 60 km By Road ..Not Far Yet ...Remains To Far For Me

Yes,wayback in 2010 after several attempts I heard relatively readable signal of All India Radio-Kokrajhar on 1512kHz via my Philips DL334 Analog Rx & my Grundig YB 400 Rx signing on with usual AIR Station signature tune plus station identification announcement in Bodo Language.I still remember , my Senior DX Friend Alokesh Gupta of New Delhi called the station official at the landline telephone number  and enquried  about its going off the air for sometime during that time.He informed me about it.And I was very amazed  by his interest and commitment to DXING hobby.And after a few weeks, I heard AIR-Kokrajhar back on air on 1512kHz around 1030utc..the regular signing on time.It mainly broadcasts in Bodo Language,the language of Bodo Community Of Assam. .But I still regret that I failed to send reception report on their transmission both to their Kokrajhar address & also via e-mail to Spectrum Manager,AIR New Delhi..Recently, I tried to listen it several times but couldn't  get its signal.My another DX Friend,Swopan Chakrovorty of Kolkata who was a frequent visitor to the area because of  his job ,asked me to visit AIR-Kokrajhar Station and also expressed his desire to visit AIR-Kokrajhar with me but due to his hectic tour program, the visit couldn't take place.My friend, Sanjeev Sakar,who now stays in Kokrajhar informed me about the location of the AIR-Kokrajhar and he also promised me to accompany me .But still......
I'm not sure now the present skd of AIR-Kokrajhar and whether it is now on air on regular basis on medium wave on 1512kHz.I'll try to monitor it on 1512kHz around 1030utc utc and let me see what I find.
